Our company has spent a great amount of time researching and evaluating innovative energy saving products and technologies. Step One: Improve The Cooling System

The signs of spring are all around us ... fish are jumping... life is a beach... school will soon be out... lets get ready for summer. A typical home owner has a home that uses insulation to protect against the heat.

Insulation quality varies a great deal. But many people will notice that the heat comes in from the roof to the attic and it slowly heats up the attic insulation. Slowly the heat builds up in the insulation and then at night it slowly seeps down into the house so that sleeping ends up being much warmer than most people want.

Coolers and air conditioners are used and they make noise and burn money and they sort of do the job. But it always seems like a battle. In some areas, the cost of cooling gets extremely high. It does not take rocket science to conclude that something might be wrong with this picture.

The good news is that the space program spent a huge amount of money to find a better way to cool both the space craft and the bodies of the people who go out into space. We can benefit from what they learned.

The big problem is the heat that is in space ( air ) , that is moving into objects ( houses and bodies ), because when it hits the surface, it penetrates and causes the objects to become warmer.

Rather than coat the space craft with huge bundles of pink insulation, the scientists invented a system of reflecting the heat back into space and away from the objects to be protected. In the case of the space craft; this was done with energy paint and with the astronauts; it was done with aluminum radiant barrier.

Businesses and governmental testing laboratories have spent more than fifteen years taking this technology and proving that it can work for home owners.

This is how a home owner can benefit from this technology. There are many options and the thinking person can evaluate and decide what is best. Consider some options:

1. Paint the roof with the energy star rated energy paint known as Thermo Shield Roof Coat. It packs a one two punch against the heat coming down from the Sun. Most of the heat that hits the roof is reflected back and it never enters the roof.

Most of the small amount of the heat that enters the Roof Coat stays in the Roof Coat until it is emitted back out into the air. Results vary with the color of the paint and the circumstances, but the total amount of heat entering the attic is often less than five percent.

We have seen tests that show that the temperature in the attic under one of these Roof Coats is only four percent above the temperature in the outside air. Think about the benefit of keeping ninety five percent of the heat from getting into the attic. The insulation will not get warmed up in a major way and the heat seeping down on top of sleeping people will be largely eliminated.

2. Paint the underside of the attic roof with energy paint. Either the Thermo Shield, or a cheaper powder ( mix it your self version ) will do a good job. In extreme heat you may get too much heat going back to the shingles so there needs to be some evaluation of this option.

3. Take Radiant Barrier that is perforated ( it has small holes to let the moisture pass through ) and roll it out over the attic insulation. As long as it is clean, ninety seven percent of the heat coming down from the roof will be reflected back up. If it gets dirty, it will still work but not as well.

4. Paint the outside walls with high quality Thermo Shield paint. There is a very fine quality stucco option that endures well and has many benefits. A cheaper powder version can also work but not as well.

5. Paint the ceilings and the inside walls with energy paint. You can make it look very attractive and it will give you many benefits including a very long lasting and easy to repair paint and in the case of Thermo Shield, a class A fire rating.

We suggest that you can use the above mentioned options to reduce the cooling cost of your home by twenty to forty five percent depending on what you do and the original condition of the home. This can represent some very major dollar savings for you and greatly increase your summer time comfort.

Step Two: Improve The Heating System

We tend not to think about it sometimes, but Old Man Winter keeps coming back. So now is a good time to prepare. The good news is that much of the summer time preparation with the Energy Paint and the Radiant Barrier will help you when warm air from getting out. Attics coated with Energy Paint send the heat back down.

Radiant Barrier in the attic send the heat back down. Ceilings and walls painted on the inside keep the heat in. Energy Paint on the outside of the home keep the heat inside. Because of these products, the energy consumed to heat the home can be reduced in the range of twenty to forty five percent depending on what was done and the original condition of the home.

This represents enormous savings for many people and will be a great benefit.

Another great product to consider is the EdenPURE heater. It is much safer, and more energy efficient than the older electric heaters and in some cases will be more energy efficient than gas, and oil heating systems.

The ability to heat in isolated areas can save a lot of money compared to the systems that heat the entire home even in areas that are not used. The heat is healthy and retains the moisture to keep thingsn comfortable. It has the potential to save heating costs up to as much as fifty percent.

Because it uses electricity so efficiently, there is an option to use solar to produce the electricity that goes into the heater to heat the home.

We have found in some tests that the combination of the Energy Paint with the heater reduced the energy consumption for heating by about sixty percent compared to an existing very inefficient heating and insulation system.

Step Three: Improve The Lighting System

We are very intrigued with the many benefits of the tubes that catch the sunshine and with reflectivity bring it in a tube down into the home to give light that is free and healthy and that makes office workers and students work more efficiently. One tube can save two hundred dollars a year in some areas.

Many people have heard about the compact florescent lights. I looked at some impressive ones last week that had a full spectrum of light which is very important. The LED lights are improving rapidly and should be watched closely. Last week I looked at a light that did not need a ballast and that had a reflector wrapped behind the tube. It was very efficient and in the long term very cost effective.

Step Four: Reduce Leaks And Cracks

We are researching some products that can be used to patch up the cracks and reduce the leaks in windows and other areas of the home. This research will be reported on later.

We have found that the Energy Paint around pipes, vents and other energy carrying systems can be very effective. The local box stores will carry products and provide information on how to do much of this.

Step Five: Look For New Sources Of Sustainable Energy

We have studied Solar Energy very extensively. In a few years it will be much more cost effective and available for most people. There are benefits to working with it this year because the federal tax benefits are available until the end of this year. Many of the states ( about 25 ) have significant benefits to reward home owners to use Solar Energy.

While I was working on this report I got a call from someone who will show our business partners some products based on fuels cells that sounds very interesting. We will meet with the inventor tomorrow to see what he has.

Step Six: Improve The Efficiency of Electric Motors

Last week I learned about a system to reduce the cost of storing foods in refrigerators and freezers. the restaurant owners are buying this product and the savings range around twenty five percent on electricity plus major savings on maintenance.

There is a product that we can get for the home owner that would go into the refrigerator. It measures the temperature of the food and the compressor only goes on when the food needs it rather than going on because the door in opened and the air temperature changes.

There is a savings on both the cost of the energy to run the refrigerator and a savings by a reduction of the food that is spoiled . This sound like a great product... especially for families with teenagers who confuse the refrigerator door with a revolving door.

Yesterday I talked with a business man who has a product that can be placed in the home to make the motors that use electricity operate more efficiently. This will help when a home has motors such as motors on the refrigerator or the air conditioner.

In some cases there have been pay backs as soon as four months. This is a product that we will get more information on. We have seen a large number of products that perform this type of service but this one stands out because of the amount of testing that shows that it is safe and that it works.
